James Burch (b. 1986, Savannah, GA) is a cellist currently based in Austin, Texas. Committed to the performance of contemporary music, he has worked with numerous composers including Xi Wang and Donnacha Dennehy. He has performed both nationally and internationally including most recently at the soundSCAPE festival, where he was awarded the Performer Prize.
His current projects include upcoming performances of works by Kaija Saariaho and Michael Gordon as well collaborations with other Austin-based composers. In addition to his role as a performer, James is also the co-director of Tetractys, a new-music concert series in Austin.
James has a D.M.A. in cello performance from The University of Texas at Austin where he studied cello with Bion Tsang and chamber music with members of the Miro Quartet. His previous teachers include Andres Diaz, Martha Gerschefski, Christopher Adkins, and Hans Jorgen Jensen.
